A Multidimensional approach to visualize and improve information flows : A Foundry Case Study

This study addresses the challenge of mapping and visualizing information flows in complex process industries, where traditional tools often fail to capture both formal and informal communication structures. A multidimensional model was created based on several analytical components, including process mapping, roles and responsibilities, meetings, decision-making, informal communication networks, and event-based modeling.The model was then tested at the foundry at Scania in Södertälje, where the findings visualize the flow of information and highlight weaknesses in the information system. When applying the model, some weaknesses within the model were identified, and improvements were suggested through an evaluation. The usability of the model was assessed as good and was considered adaptable to other industrial cases.The study contributes by offering a practical and adaptable model for visualizing information flows in process industries, balancing comprehensiveness with clarity. It also demonstrates the importance of integrating both formal and informal information structures to support effective decision-making and quality management in complex organizational environments.
