Sammanfattning

For the summer of 2026 Malmö stad has a project called “Sommarkaj”, which aims to temporarily activate two piers in Nyhamnen, a neighborhood being redeveloped. The goal with this bachelor project was to suggest a contribution to project sommarkaj, within the skillset of an industrial designer. In order to get a result suited for the space, field research was done on the docks, which lead to some insights about the history of the place, how it is being used today and its strengths and weaknesses. The core take away from this research was the spaces strong nautical environment, and its underdeveloped nature. A couple of themes based on the nautical nature were defined, and used as a tool of inspiration in the design process. To understand the subject of activating spaces, similar projects were explored, which lead to an identification of three categories of parameters that created public interest in a space. These were atmosphere, activity and awareness, and they were used as guides for decision making throughout the entire process. Several ideas to activate the space were explored, but in communication with the project sommarkaj team, the decision was made to develop one of them further. The concept was a modular system of concrete foundations with leaning poles, which were inspired by the angles objects by the ocean tend start having as a result of the natural forces they are subjected to. To the poles there were attachments like roofs, lights and planks. To further understand the needs of the system, all the design requirements were defined, after which the concept was properly developed into a fully functioning system. It was given form inspired by the themes, and in the end a scale model of the system, as well as a full scale model of one section was built to communicate the design and to test if it actually worked as intended In the end the result was a fun, easily installable, reusable, trans- portable modular room creation system, with a lot of value for the cost.
