Sammanfattning

Pollution and its resulting negative health outcomes are a challenge in many of Mexico’s large urbanareas. Pollution is closely linked to emissions from the large number of gas-powered passengervehicles in circulation. Electric vehicles are a low-emission alternative to gas-powered vehicles andhave the potential to be a solution to greatly reduce emissions, though the adoption rate is currentlylow. This report aims to identify the main factors driving electric vehicle adoption in Mexico, withthe goal of proposing measures to accelerate the transition to electric vehicles and to reduce emissionsand pollution. The study employs a literature review of previous research, interviews with industryexperts, and a multiple regression analysis between states in order to model the key drivers of electricvehicle adoption in Mexico. Our findings indicate that financial incentives, charging infrastructureexpansion, increased innovation, and improved regulatory frameworks are needed to increase electricvehicle adoption. The results also point to the potential of consumer education, tightened emissionsstandards, improvement of grid robustness, a transition of the supply chain, and cost reductionthrough improved battery technology, as relevant factors. These findings may be used to informboth policy and industry decisions in order to accelerate the electrification of transport and toreduce pollution in Mexico and in similar contexts.
