Sammanfattning

Our hands are highly intricate structures with complicated pathways for sensation and motor control. When exposed to a nerve-affecting injury, the process of rehabilitation is long and complicated, with no guarantee of success. Studies have shown that electrical stimulation proximal to the injury site could provide a way to regain sensations in the distal parts of the hand. By stimulating in different activation patterns, it is also possible to create a sensation of movement along the hand, known as tactile motion. The aim of this study is to provide an algorithm that can help find electrode combinations used to evoke such sensations. Data was gathered from multiple volunteers in order to evaluate how electrical stimulation on the median nerve would be perceived among able-bodied participants. The participants registered the location of the hand where they felt a sensation, and this was analyzed in relation to the activation in the multipad electrode. The main results were that areas of the thumb are most likely to be activated and the activation is primarily related to the electrodes on the outer part of the multipad electrode. A significant difference was also observed between the multipad electrode placement on the right and left wrist regarding which electrodes activate specific areas of the hand. In conclusion, the study provided an algorithm capable of statistically determine along which lines in the hand it is possible to create a sensory trajectory.
