The aim of this study was to examine the significance of psychosocial work and perspective in addiction care within the Swedish healthcare system and what it is that enables or limits healthcare counselors’ psychosocial work in the medical context. The methodology is based on a qualitative approach using eight semi-structured interviews with healthcare counselors working with addiction care in the region of Skåne, Sweden. The results were consequently analyzed using thematic analysis and three themes were identified: individual aspects, relational aspects and structural aspects. In the analysis, the results were understood through the following theoretical framework: Lipsky’s theory of discretion and street-level bureaucracy as well as Abbott’s theory of jurisdiction. The findings show that healthcare counselors within addiction care oscillate between using two different strategies in their jurisdictional work: to blend in and to stand out. The study further found that the healthcare counselors within addiction care enjoy substantial discretion, despite the limitations of organizational aspects. In contrast to previous research, the study’s overall conclusion is that psychosocial work and perspective are given great importance in addiction care within the Swedish healthcare system rather than being neglected.
