An Investigation Into the Camber Present in the Wings of Flying Fish

Sammanfattning

This paper simulates idealized wings of flying fish in order to find an airfoil camberwhich matches the performance of real flying fish wings. Simulation data was gath-ered through SU2 simulation at a reynolds number of 2.0 × 104 and with a headwindof 12 ms−1. A wing profile was swept from 0 to 12 % camber and then compared to ex-perimental data gathered on Cypselurus hiraii. Comparing these gives that flying fishlikely have a camber between 4 and 5 percent of wing chord length. Implementationof these findings on future marine robotics should yield performance closer to that ofnatural flying fish.
