Sammanfattning

The world population is growing, and with it, the demand for food. To combat this will be agreat challenge, since it requires a developed agriculture in Africa, which today is not the case. One of the major causes is food crop loss, low fertility soils and the tropical climate. This studyaims to address the challenges of secure food production in the rural fishing village Linga Linga,Mozambique - a village where the chances of an effective agriculture is impeded due to sandy soil, the tropical climate and limited access to resources. The challenge is addressed by constructinga low-cost, small-scale aquaponic system in the village and evaluating its viability. It was foundthat aquaponics, in theory, is a great solution when it comes to sustainable food production, but having the right resources and knowledge is indispensable to be able to run such a system. With Linga Linga being a village lacking both of these further innovations would be needed tomake a low-cost aquaponic system viable and accessible for the inhabitants of the village. Theseinnovations include reducing the system’s electricity consumption and modifying the design todecrease construction costs.
