"Är du läkare? De blir verkligen förvånade att man kan se ut så här." : En kvalitativ studie om vård-och omsorgspersonalens upplevelser av vardagsrasism på arbetsplatsen

The aim of this study is to analyse how everyday racism manifests itself in the workplace and how racist practices affect racialized employees within the health care and social care sector. This study is qualitative and is based on seven semi-structured interviews with racialized individuals working in the health and social care sector. The main theories used are the theory of everyday racism, intersectionality and minority stress, which helped to highlight how racism creates inequality, is reproduced and manifests itself through daily experiences, as well as how different power structures intersect in the respondents daily work experiences and how everyday racism affects them.The results indicate that everyday racism manifests itself through subtle actions in the respondents' interaction with colleagues and patients, for example through questioning of competence, invisibilization, exclusion from the social community, as well as expectations to adapt to the normative culture. The respondents also describe how these experiences affect their well-being through stress, feelings of exclusion and limited career opportunity. In conclusion I argue that everyday racism in the workplace can be counteracted through organizational responsibility, clear policies and active effort to create a more inclusive work environment.
