Sammanfattning

The pharmaceutical industry stands at a critical juncture where demands for accelerated development processes intersect with strict regulatory frameworks and data confidentiality. Within this tension, Artificial Intelligence (AI) offers the potential to streamline project management; however, its implementation is challenged by the industry's unique requirements for security and risk mitigation. The purpose of this study is to investigate how AI can support project management in complex environments, such as pharmaceutical development, with a focus on both opportunities and challenges.A qualitative study was conducted based on semi-structured interviews with seven project managers and specialists operating within drug development. The data was analyzed using thematic analysis to identify patterns in usage and attitudes. The result of the thematic analysis is presented in four themes: Theme 1: AI – the new information retriever and linguistic editor, Theme 2: AI – operational support with strategic effect, Theme 3: AI – between innovation and control, Theme 4: AI – the competence paradox. The results indicate that AI primarily serves as administrative support, liberating time by automating documentation, language review, and proposal planning. Simultaneously, a distinct tension is identified between cloud-based AI services and the industry’s compliance requirements, creating uncertainty regarding data security. The conclusion is that AI is transforming the project manager role from operational administration toward strategic management. However, successful implementation requires a balance where efficiency gains are weighed against the necessity for human oversight and strict regulatory compliance.
