Sammanfattning

This study investigates under which transport conditions the reuse of construction materials is environmentally and economically advantageous compared with new production. The analysis focuses on three structural materials: steel beams, cross-laminated timber (CLT), and hollow-core concrete slabs. A calculation-based comparative approach was applied using climate data from Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), transport emission factors, and economic data obtained from literature and industry sources. The study examines how increasing transport distances influence climate impacts and total costs for reused materials. The results indicate that reused steel beams maintain significant environmental and economic advantages over very long transport distances because of the high emissions associated with steel production. CLT and hollow-core elements also show environmental benefits, although their break-even points are reached at shorter transport distances. The findings suggest that material properties, production emissions, weight, and transport characteristics strongly influence the feasibility and performance of reuse systems.
