Due to inherently poor adhesion between cold paint and glass, flaking paint is one ofthe most common conservation issues in reverse glass paintings. Re-adheringflaking paint in these objects is challenging, as the adhesive used needs to have bothdesirable adhesive and optical properties, more so than on substrates where theadhesive is less visible. This thesis aims to contribute to existing knowledge of readhesionof oil paint on glass, while also examining whether the surfacecharacteristics of various glass substrates affect adhesion. With a starting point in avisual and tactile examination of damaged reverse glass paintings in the collection ofKalmar County Museum, an experimental study was designed to evaluate theadhesive and optical properties of four synthetic resins and dispersions commonlyused in conservation: Paraloid B-72, Regalrez 1094, Laropal A81 and LascauxMedium for Consolidation. The results were interpreted using Polarized LightMicroscopy (PLM) and a semi-quantitative Scotch tape test. Laropal A81 wasdeemed the most suitable overall, however plenty of factors need to be taken intoconsideration when choosing an adhesive.
