Abstract Being Cared for in a State of Vulnerability – A Qualitative Literature Review. Background: Patients’ experiences of encounters in perioperative care are influenced by both organizational conditions and interactions with surgical teams. A deeper understanding of these experiences is essential for promoting security, dignity, and safe care. Aim: The aim was to describe patients’ experiences of surgical teams’ conduct in perioperative care. Method: A systematic literature review was conducted based on searches in CINAHL and PubMed. The included studies were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis according to Braun and Clarke and quality appraised using the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme (CASP). Results: Patients’ experiences are characterized by vulnerability, anxiety, and a need for security. Positive encounters are supported by continuity, clear and individualized communication, emotional support, and respect for dignity. Deficiencies in continuity and communication contribute to fragmented care and reduced participation. The perioperative nurse emerges as central in integrating technical safety with relational presence. Organizational factors such as staffing levels and work environment influence the ability to provide person-centered care. Conclusion: Encounters in the perioperative setting are shaped by the interaction between organizational factors, care processes, and patients’ experiences. Improved preoperative communication and relational continuity can enhance patients’ sense of security, reduce anxiety, and contribute to higher quality and safety in care. The operating room nurse plays a significant role in translating these principles into clinical practice.
