The aim of this study was to examine women’s experiences of intimate partner violence andthe factors that may influence their ability to leave an abusive relationship. The study wasconducted as a structured literature review in which ten peer-reviewed articles were analyzed.The data were collected through systematic searches in relevant databases and screened usinginclusion and exclusion criteria. The material was then thematically analyzed using thetheoretical frameworks of the normalization process and the gender power perspective inorder to identify key patterns in previous research. The results show that women are often exposed to multiple forms of violence simultaneously,where control and psychological violence are particularly prominent. Violence is described asa gradual process that becomes normalized over time, which makes it more difficult to leavethe relationship. The results also show that factors such as children, finances, fear, and lack ofsupport influence women’s process of leaving an abusive relationship. The conclusion is that intimate partner violence must be understood as both an individual andstructural problem, where the normalization process and unequal power relations play acentral role. The study also highlights the need for further research on social interventionsand long-term support for women exposed to violence.
