Sammanfattning

This study evaluates the technical and economic feasibility of integrating battery storage with an existing PV system in a municipal building characterized by high electricity demand. The analysis was carried out using simulations in PVsyst and HOMER Grid, supported by economic calculations in Excel. Eleven battery configurations ranging from 50 to 1 000 kWh were investigated. Economic performance was assessed using Net Present Value, Internal Rate of Return and Discounted Payback Period alongside sensitivity analysis considering investment costs, discount rates, electricity pricing structures and their combined effect. The results show that increasing battery capacity reduces grid electricity consumption and increases the self-consumption of PV-generated electricity. However, under the current electricity tariff structure none of the evaluated configurations are economically viable over the analysis period. The sensitivity analysis indicates that significant reductions in battery costs are required for economic competitiveness under stable electricity prices. Overall, the findings demonstrate that battery storage can improve the energy balance of municipal buildings with complex load profiles, but economic viability is highly sensitive to both investment costs and electricity price volatility. When exposed to dynamic hourly pricing, the economic performance improves, suggesting that future profitability may depend on increased price fluctuations or the introduction of additional revenue streams such as ancillary services.
