Sammanfattning
Beauty is a fundamental human need. It is not a passive experience but an active force that sustains dignity, identity, and hope. This text examines why beauty matters and what is lost when it is dismissed or destroyed. By tracing the historical development of beauty, from ancient Greek theories of proportion and harmony through to its gradual decline in modernity, it argues that understanding this history is essential to grasping why beauty remains relevant today and why its absence carries real consequences. In architecture, beauty is not decoration but a means of affirming belonging, cultural continuity, and humanity. These ideas are applied to the context of Palestine, where the conscious creation of beauty in the built environment becomes an act of resistance, affirming the identity and continuity of a people whose culture and heritage are being deliberately erased. This is explored through a design proposal for the reconstruction and recovery of a building in Gaza, where beauty is not an afterthought but an instrument of healing.
