Sammanfattning

This thesis explores the role of the Somali diaspora in peacebuilding and conflict in Somalia, focusing on their contributions, motivations, and perceptions by local actors. Utilizing a qualitative research design based on semi-structured interviews with eight participants, including diaspora members in Sweden, the UK, and the US, as well as local actors in Somalia, the study examines how transnational engagement, such as remittances, development projects, associations, and digital media, shapes peace and conflict dynamics in Somalia. The findings suggest that diaspora involvement is largely positive and contributes to peacebuilding by supporting development sectors like education, health, livelihoods, and reconciliation. As one participant noted, the diaspora’s contribution is “99% positive,” describing them as the “backbone of Somali society for the last three decades.” However, the study also highlights the risks of unintentional negative impacts, such as reinforcing local divisions. Framed by transnationalism, peacebuilding, and conflict theory, this research underscores the complex and evolving role of the diaspora in Somalia’s recovery.
