Sammanfattning

Abstract This study aims to examine how identity regulations were used and changed or remained over time in the newspaper Handelsarbetaren produced and published by the trade union of Svenska varuaktörer- och handelsarbetarförbundet from the years 1909, 1913 and 1921. The newspaper was first published in 1908 and has been used by the trade union to communicate stories, values and important information to its members ever since. These values and stories told by the authors in the paper are proven by previous research to always be practices of identity regulation in order to change the members of the unions perception of reality, even though the authors maybe did not know it at the time. To fulfill the purpose this study has used a qualitative text analysis to read each newspaper to identify these identity regulations. To then be able to analyse them in the context of the trade union development in Sweden during the early twentieth century. The results of the study contains that the identity regulations can be found in every individual newspaper. However the way these regulations take shape differentiate between each newspaper. The regulations in 1909 reflects the positive development of Swedens trade union at the time by focusing on further development and to retain their capacity. In the same way the newspaper from 1913 reflects the negative development by describing the opposition in a more prominent way than before. The results also show that the regulations in the newspaper from 1921 had returned to a way more similar to 1909 because of the recurring positive development. This newspaper also partly reflects the active mobilisation attempt by trade unions at the time.
