Sammanfattning

Abstract: Background: Postpartum depression is a public health problem that not only affects the woman but also impacts other family members. Currently there´s limited evidence regarding physiotherapeutic interventions, as existing research has primarily focused on psychological treatments. Physiotherapeutic intervention in the form of physical activity show a consistent trend toward reducing depressive symptoms. To highlight biopsychosocial factors, social cognitive theory is applied, focusing on the interaction between the individual, the environment and behavior. Aim: This systematic literature review investigated the biopsychosocial effects of physiotherapeutic interventions involving physical activity in women with postpartum depression. Methods: A systematic literature review was conducted using articles retrieved from PubMed and CINAHL. Five randomized controlled trails (RCT) and one RCT pilot study were included. The studies were quality assessed using the SBU review template. Results: The interventions varied across studies but primarily consisted of moderate-intensity aerobic exercise. Intervention durations ranged from 4-12 weeks. Three out of six studies showed statistically significant differences regarding depressive symptoms in between-group comparison. All studies showed a moderate to high risk of bias, which limits the preliminary strength of the evidence. Conclusion: Physiotherapeutic interventions involving physical activity may influence biopsychosocial factors by reducing depressive symptoms in women with PPD. The results should be interpreted with caution due to the high risk of bias and limited generalizability. Keywords: Behavioral medicine. Depressive symptoms. Exercise Physiotherapy. Physical activity.
