Public transportation must be attractive to foster sustainable societies, yet its appeal is often diminished by suboptimal passenger experiences at transit stops. This study focuses on bus stops in the urban area of Svedala municipality, exploring enhancements in bus stop design, functionality, and the application of nudging principles to elevate the appeal of public transport. Through a mixed-methods approach, combining survey data (N=16), site observations, and a literature review, the study highlights potential for improvements. The primary sources of passenger stress are the lack of reliable real-time information, followed by concerns about secure bicycle parking and perceived safety. Overall, the moderate satisfaction with existing bus shelters signals an untapped potential for quality improvements. The findings of this study also support an emerging consensus that bus stops should be considered as integrated and value-creating urban spaces. By applying design principles focusing on Accessibility (especially informational), Transparency, and Usability, in combination with behavior-influencing nudging, waiting environments can be transformed and improved. Strategic initiatives include prioritizing robust information systems and safety-enhancing measures, such as secure bicycle storage, and improvements of basic comfort. Aesthetics and green infrastructure are also highlighted as important factors for strengthening the place’s identity and enriching the overall travel experience, thereby fostering more positive attitudes towards public transport. While the findings of this study are limited by methodological constraints (e.g., a small sample size, N=16), it identifies key local friction points and offers a theoretically grounded framework for improvements. However, to translate these initial insights into generalizable and evidence-based solutions, further research is required, including in-depth qualitative studies, quantitative studies with larger-scale surveys, and field experiments. Such an iterative process is crucial for transforming bus stops into attractive and functional nodes that actively encourage increased and sustainable use of public transportation, in line with broader societal sustainability goals.
