Sammanfattning

There is an urgent need to reduce carbon emissions to combat the ongoing climate crisis. The boreal forest contains one third of the stored carbon in terrestrial ecosystems and is an important tool to mitigate climate change. Sweden largely use clear-cutting as its forestry model which results in a large carbon debt. Throughout history, the Swedish boreal forest has burned approximately 80 years apart and prescribed burning is used today to imitate the natural regeneration needed in the forest. This pilot study quantified the emissions caused by clear-cutting and prescribed burning in a forest north of Umeå, Sweden with the aim of comparing their short-term climate impacts. The study shows that on a short time scale, clear-cutting emits around seven times more carbon dioxide from tree biomass than prescribed burning.
