¡Cortita y al pie! : Estudio sociolingüístico de las actitudes de los uruguayos ante expresiones futboleras en contextos no deportivos

The objective of this study is to examine the attitudes of Uruguayan speakers toward the use of soccer-related expressions beyond the sports domain, with particular emphasis on their association with national identity and their degree of acceptance in formal, semiformal and informal contexts, and in relation to age as a sociolinguistic variable. The study was conducted with Uruguayan participants divided into three age groups: 18–30, 31–50, and 51 years of age and older. The research instrument consisted of a questionnaire divided into three sections. Section A gathered demographic information, including variables such as age and level of interest in soccer. Section B explored the contexts in which soccer-related expressions are used, as well as their frequency of use and degree of familiarity, as measured through a Likert scale and participants’ perceptions. Section C examined linguistic attitudes by assessing beliefs concerning national identity, the expressive value of soccer-related language, and its acceptability in formal, semiformal, and informal contexts through the use of a Likert scale. The findings of this study suggest that participants perceive soccer-related expressions as cultural markers that contribute to the construction of a shared national identity. Furthermore, these expressions are viewed as being predominantly associated with informal contexts, while also being adaptable to more formal communicative settings.
