Sammanfattning

Abstract: Reintegration into society after criminality is a complex process influenced by social, structural, and individual factors. Individuals released from prison often face challenges related to housing, employment, finances, social relationships, and stigma. Within this process, the Swedish Probation Service plays a central role through both supportive and controlling functions. The aim of this study was to examine how probation officers describe clients’ reintegration into society after criminality, as well as the opportunities and obstacles that emerge in this process. The study was based on a qualitative research design using seven semi-structured interviews with probation officers working within the Swedish Probation Service. The material was analyzed through thematic analysis and interpreted using the theories of stigma, ecological systems theory, and street-level bureaucracy. The findings show that reintegration is shaped by the interaction between individual motivation, social networks, organizational conditions, and societal structures. Stable housing, employment, supportive relationships, and collaboration between authorities were described as important factors for successful reintegration. At the same time, probation officers highlighted challenges such as stigma, limited resources, high workload, and the balance between support and control. The study demonstrates that reintegration after criminality cannot solely be understood as an individual responsibility, but must also be viewed in relation to structural conditions and access to support. The findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the practical conditions shaping probation work and the importance of coordinated support efforts in reducing recidivism.
