Data governance in post-merger: A multi-method case study

Organizations undergoing post-merger ERP transformations face significant challenges in designing unified master data governance frameworks. This study investigates how the post-merger context shapes master data governance design through a qualitative single case study of a large global company adopting a renewal integration strategy. Findings offer practitioners insights: a "renewal" approach effectively neutralizes legacy dominance conflicts; federated governance balances standardization with domain autonomy; and embedding data governance within the broader ERP programme secures executive commitment and resources. Furthermore, sequencing data governance design ahead of technical implementation substantially reduces downstream data quality risks according to data practitioners. Master data governance and architecture must be designed in tandem, as each constrains and enables the other.
