Embedded systems for pet tracking are becoming increasingly common, but many commercial solutions rely on mobile networks, subscription services, or suffer from limited battery life. There is therefore a need to investigate alternative solutions that are cost-effective, energy-efficient, and independent of external services. This thesis presents the development and evaluation of a prototype pet tracking system consisting of a wearable tracking device, a base station, and an Android application. The system collects position data, transmits the information wirelessly between devices, and presents it to the user through a mobile application. To protect sensitive information, encryption and authentication mechanisms are implemented throughout the system. The results show that the system functions as a cohesive solution in which position data can be collected, transmitted, and visualized reliably. Range tests demonstrate functional communication up to approximately 500 meters in an urban environment, and the implemented security mechanisms operate as intended. The work demonstrates that it is possible to develop a functional pet tracking system using open and cost-effective components without reliance on commercial subscriptions or mobile network coverage.
