Designing for AI transparency : A case study on Human-AI interaction

This study explores how to approach the design of AI-driven digital products through a critical lens. Specifically, it investigates how insights from the field of Critical Studies of AI can inform decision-making throughout the design process, making the focus extend beyond enhancing human-AI interactions to also consider the broader social implications these systems may have. A case study approach was implemented to gain practical insights from a real-world context. The subject of the study was a start-up in the development phase of AI-driven tools, designed to facilitate networking, optimize workflows, and uncover hidden connections between people and data. From theoretical analysis, AI transparency was identified as a bridge concept between the fields of Human-AI interaction and the Critical Studies of AI. Furthermore, explainability and human control mechanisms were found to be potential design resources for AI transparency. Especially the type of explanations that are informed by social science on how humans naturally understand information, and tailored for diverse audiences, including non-AI experts. These insights were integrated into a sketch of the design concept, Transparency Layer, which was later presented through a series of Design Scenarios. Initial feedback indicated the potential of these design resources to promote AI transparency. However, further development is needed. This thesis project concludes with a sketch of the design concept, intended to spark dialogue about how to design for AI transparency.
