This study examines conditions and functions of Swedish prison libraries along with their needs, and challenges, through the experiences of six people working with library service at prisons of security class 1 or 2. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews. Through a thematic analysis, themes were recognized from our data together with the theoretical framework which included roles and impact areas for the prison library, and the prison as a total institution. The results revealed varied conditions for the libraries. Access to a library room and the titles among the personnel were two examples of this. In order to make library service in prisons equal, the need for updated guidelines was identified. The fact that the libraries are situated in the prison context enables reading, at the same time as it affects the library services through security adjustments. A number of functions of the libraries emerged where providing literature was central. The library as an environment that encourages reading and as a mediator of culture was seen, along with an informative role. Some of the challenges disclosed were linked to the impact of the The Swedish Prison and Probation Service’s ongoing expansion, whilst other concerned how the security regulations affects the library service. Physical space for the library was a recurrent need among the respondents. If defined spaces for libraries were made a part of the current expansion, the access to the libraries could improve. The study shows that the prison library is an asset, which can be further developed and emphasized.
