This thesis investigates the feasibility of developing a custom IoT solution as an al-ternative to commercially available products, evaluated across three dimensions: cost,performance, and development complexity. A motion detection camera system was de-signed and implemented using a Raspberry Pi Zero 2 W, a PIR motion sensor, a cameramodule, and open-source software including Home Assistant and MQTT.The prototype achieved a total hardware cost of approximately $91 with a detectionrate of 100% at close range, sub-second detection latency at short ranges, and a falsepositive rate of 0%. Development required approximately 125 hours of work.The findings suggest that a DIY IoT solution is technically feasible and offers advan-tages in privacy, data ownership, and extensibility, but comes at a higher component costand a moderate time investment.
