Sammanfattning
This thesis explores the development of 3D printable building materials using engineered living materials (ELMs) based on yeast. The aim was to understand how different additives such as glycerol, calcium carbonate, and alternative yeast strains affect the material’s mechanical strength and the survival of living cells. The results showed that moderate amounts of glycerol improved flexibility and cell viability, while calcium carbonate increased the material’s resistance to compression. Non-conventional yeasts like Rhodotorula graminis and Yarrowia lipolytica were also tested, with varying success in long-term survival. Overall, the study highlights how additive choices impact both the physical and biological properties of yeast based ELMs, offering insights for more sustainable construction materials.
