A significant share of society´s energy use is linked to the building and real estate sector,where heat losses through windows represent an important factor, particularly in olderbuildings. It is therefore essential to investigate effective window-related measures to reduceenergy consumption.The purpose of this study is to examine how different measures for upgrading windowsaffect the energy performance of buildings. The study focuses on comparing four renovationalternatives with a complete window replacement.The method used in this study is a case study in which a reference building is analyzed usingenergy simulations in IDA ICE. To gain a broader understanding, the simulations arecomplemented with interviews and a literature study to gather relevant information and dataabout previous real-world implemented projects. This method combination provides bothquantitative and qualitative perspectives.The results show that all measures improve energy performance compared to existingwindows. Window replacement provides the greatest energy savings, while renovation canachieve good performance with almost similar energy efficiency.The conclusion of the study is that window renovation can be a sustainable alternative towindow replacement, depending on the building’s conditions. Therefore, the choice ofmeasure should be based on a holistic assessment that considers both energy performance,climate affect and cost impact.
