This report presents an evaluation of the Host Identity Protocol (HIP) within the contextof industrial networks, focusing on its impact on network performance, security, and re-liability. The evaluation utilizes a combination of network simulation using Mininet andreal-world testing to assess HIP’s effectiveness in addressing the unique challenges andrequirements of industrial environments. The report begins by discussing the principlesof HIP and its security considerations, highlighting its potential to enhance authenticationand mitigate various forms of attacks. It then introduces tools such as Scapy and pyMod-busTCP used for packet generation and network emulation, providing insights into themethodologies employed for testing HIP. The evaluation involves simulated network se-tups resembling Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) architectures, aiming to replicate real-world conditions accurately. Through experiments conducted in these environments, thereport analyzes the performance of HIP in terms of latency, throughput, and security com-pared to traditional IP-based communication. Results from the simulations and real-worldtests are presented and discussed, revealing insights into the distribution of round-triptimes (RTT) and time-of-flight variations. The discussion delves into the implications ofthese findings, considering factors such as network complexity, traffic patterns, and proto-col interactions. The report discusses the methodological considerations and limitations of usingMininet for network emulation, emphasizing the need for rigorous validation and sensitiv-ity analysis. It also addresses the broader context of evaluating HIP in industrial networks, highlighting the challenges posed by network complexity and the importance of standard-izing test scenarios for meaningful comparisons. In conclusion, the report provides a com-prehensive assessment of HIP’s performance in industrial environments, offering insightsinto its strengths, limitations, and potential areas for further research and development.
