Everyday Rail Mobility in Northern Sweden : Benefits, Challenges, and Mobility Practices Among Work Commuters Between Umeå and Sundsvall

A solution to climate change caused by the transport sector is a shift towards sustainable transport options, including rail. However, railways are particularly vulnerable to disruptions, caused by factors such as weather and failure of the network, which influence people's mobility. Disruptions further impact individuals' experiences of rail transport, and have an effect on travel satisfaction. This study adopts a qualitative approach using semi-structured interviews to explore work commuters experiences of rail transport along the corridor between Umeå and Sundsvall. This corridor includes the Bothnia line (Botniabanan) and Ådalen line (Ådalsbanan) which was built partly to improve regional commuting in the area. Drawing on the theoretical frameworks of time-geography and practice theory, the findings show that the railway plays a significant role in enabling regional accessibility to the labour market and flexible lifestyles. At the same time, recurring delays and disruptions create uncertainty and dependence on alternative transport options. This study highlights the importance of reliable railway systems for supporting everyday mobility in the region, and suggests that investments in railway infrastructure are essential for promoting sustainable commuting between Umeå and Sundsvall.
