Flyktingkrisens påverkan på invandringens representation i svensk media : En analys av innehållet i artiklar från stora svenska tidningar före och efter flyktingkrisen 2015

This paper is a qualitative study that aims to research the representation of immigrants and immigration in various high-profile Swedish newspapers, before and after the refugee crisis of 2015. The intent is to see how representation is carried out, with language as the tool, as well as noticing patterns in representation within the given time periods. The data contains multiple articles of varied themes and publication dates. To aid in gaining a deeper understanding of the question, this paper has incorporated Stuart Hall’s theories on the aspects of representation, along with Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis as presented in Svensson’s works. The findings have shown that while not fully black nor white, the dominant patterns before the refugee crisis of 2015 generally show more optimism towards immigration, while being more hostile towards the typically right-wing critics of such topics. After the refugee crisis of 2015, the dominant representation of immigrants and immigration in the data seems to be an image of a national threat and societal problem.
