Sammanfattning

As the electricity grid expands, older power line poles need to be removed. These poles areoften treated with CCA, CZA, zinc and creosote. These preservatives contain arsenic, zinc, chromium, copper and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which can be harmful toboth humans and environment. When power line poles are removed, the contaminationaround the pole is managed by excavating the soil and replacing it with clean fill material. This process requires large resources in terms of transport and handling of soil masses. This thesis aims to contribute to a more sustainable remediation process by increasingknowledge about how contaminants spread around the poles. The study investigates howcontaminants spread around common pole types found in Svenska kraftnät’s transmissioncorridors and is based on collected data from completed removals. A risk assessment has alsobeen carried out, where guideline values adapted to general condition at pole sites have beencalculated using the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency’s model and compared withmeasured concentrations.Arsenic, zinc and PAHs are found in concentrations above the calculated guideline values, mainly within one meter from the pole and are assessed to pose risk to humans and theenvironment. Copper and chromium exceeded the guidelines values at a few individuallocations.
