Sammanfattning
The construction sector faces a significant challenge in reducing its greenhouse gas emissions, particularly using building materials and construction machinery. For Sweden to reach its goal of climate neutrality by 2045, innovative solutions are needed in all construction disciplines, including foundation construction. This study investigates the potential of fossil-free steel as a sustainable alternative for piling, with the aim of reducing the climate impact of construction projects. Through a combination of literature reviews, interviews with experts and a case study, data was collected to analyze the life cycle assessment (LCA) and cost analysis of fossil-free steel compared to traditional materials. The results show that fossil-free steel significantly reduces CO2 emissions compared to steel and concrete. Despite higher initial costs, long-term savings can be achieved through reduced environmental taxes and increased market demand for sustainable building materials. The analysis of the interviews with construction sector stakeholders revealed challenges, such as the need for increased awareness and education around sustainable material choices. Several interviewees pointed out that economic considerations are often prioritized over environmental ones, indicating a need to develop economic incentives and clearer requirements from clients. The case study showed concrete benefits of fossil-free steel in terms of reducing climate impact, strengthening the case for its use in future construction projects. The discussion highlights that while fossil-free steel offers significant environmental benefits, considerable efforts are needed to overcome economic and technical barriers. Further research is recommended to investigate the energy sources for the production of fossil-free steel, long-term economic benefits and regional variations in the implementation of sustainable building materials. By addressing these areas, the construction industry can better prepare for future climate challenges and contribute to sustainable development.
