The purpose of this essay is to investigate how routines are formed and rituals are created in co-housing. Material has been collected through interviews and observations to shed light on how strangers navigate the shared home. The work is based on Erving Goffman’s theory of social interaction as well as Ehn and Löfgren’s perspective on everyday behaviors. The analysis shows that access to private apartments provides residents with a certain level of freedom within the community, as the co-housing units involve organized and mandatory activities. When a new resident moves in, the house is influenced by the meeting of different personalities and their ideas regarding the house's development. This creates a new situation for the group to navigate. Convenience does not seem to noticeably affect private routines and rituals, because the residents have their own apartments where these can be performed.
