The goal of this project was to develop a digital platform to enable streaming of opera performances as well as real-time chat between users in self-created chat rooms. The project was carried out as a full-stack web application project, using React for the frontend, Node.js for the backend, and MongoDB as the database. Socket.io was implemented as the main technology to handle real-time communication and create a smooth user experience. The project was completed over ten weeks by two developers on behalf of Malmö Opera through the consulting company adesso Sweden. The result was a published web app with fully functional live chat and video playback. Throughout the work, the developers gained valuable experience in real-time solutions, agile methodology, and collaboration within the team and with the client. The project also provided lessons regarding technical challenges, requirements management, and architectural choices, where the decision to build a Single Page Application (SPA) offered advantages for the user experience but also raised questions about when a Multi Page Application (MPA) might be more suitable. Reflections on version control, pair programming, and the importance of clear communication were highlighted as key success factors. The project demonstrates that a well-planned and structured development process is crucial to managing complexity and delivering a functional product within a limited timeframe.
