Från begrepp till samhällsproblem : En diskursanalys av integration, migration och etnicitet i läroböcker

This study presents how textbooks in samhällskunskap nivå 1b define the concepts of integration, migration and ethnicity. The textbooks consist of the new subject plan that was implemented in 2025. This material is crucial for students to create knowledge about society and become democratic citizens. The purpose of the essay is to define and present how the concept of integration, migration and ethnicity are presented in textbooks. As well as present how the different books deal with the “us-and-them”- thinking. The essay also aims to study how integration can be presented as a “social problem”. The study itself is based on a qualitative text analysis of four textbooks within the course samhällskunskap nivå 1b. In order to be able to carry out this analysis more specifically, two different methods are used. Discourse analysis is one of the methods for the essay and Carol Bacchi's WPR method is also used. The results of the study show that, in general, all four textbooks present and define the concept of integration, migration and ethnicity in a similar way. Overall, the definitions are neutral and different forms of discourse are used to explain the “us-and-them” thinking. Integration can become a “social problem” when the phenomenon does not work, the focus is more on individuals and groups.
