Sammanfattning

This thesis is an archival pedagogical analysis of the potential usage of the Living History Forum’s committee archive in Holocaust education efforts to capacitate teachers and popular educators. The thesis aims to demonstrate how the Committee archives can be understood and utilized in an archival pedagogical context. By utilizing sociologist Anthony Giddens’ structuration theory, the paper explains how archives are composed as a structural system consisting of rules, resources, principles, and processes that both direct and enable pedagogical utilization. Accordingly, the theoretical focus of this thesis will also contribute to an archival scientific perspective on the practical and theoretical conditions of archival pedagogy. The thesis demonstrates that the Committee archives has the potential to develop ontological security among teachers and popular educators, revolving around the purpose of democracy promoting Holocaust education, and pedagogical professional identity. Thus, the paper demonstrates the balance to develop the target groups archive and primary source literacy. Likewise, since the secondary value in the form of pedagogy is not explicit, the pedagogical utilization of the archives depends on the archivist to interpret the structural construction of the archive. The thesis concludes that archivists need to activate utilization through a discursive awareness, motivating the utilization and mediating an understanding of the conditions of the utilization. Thus, the thesis offers a perspective on processes for identifying the potentials and delimitations of archives, for pedagogical ends.
