Sammanfattning

The aim of this thesis is to investigate the effects of both local political circumstances and international aid on the Zimbabwean civil society in the context of democratization. The theory used in this thesis is Boussard’s theory concerning civil society and democratization. The study was conducted as a case study through a qualitative text analysis, and partly an analysis of ideal types. The results of this thesis show that the local political circumstances play a mayor role in determining the ability of the Zimbabwean civil society to work towards a democratization. Corruption and political repression effectively hinder the Zimbabwean civil society. The effect of international aid is not solely positive. Large parts of the Zimbabwean civil society are either wholly dependent on international aid or politized to such an extent that they are more or less part of the ruling party.
