Sammanfattning
AbstractIn recent decades, the Premier League has developed from a national football league to aglobal billion-dollar industry where wealthy owners invest huge sums in pursuit of sportingsuccess. The study examines whether clubs can invest in their way to the top by analyzing 11clubs that have continuously played in the top league for seven seasons. Focus variables aresalary costs, transfer costs and coach changes and their impact on the number of pointsrecorded. Our analysis shows a pattern where salary costs are the single most important factor forsporting success. There is a strong and statistical correlation that shows that the more a clubinvests in wages, the more points a club picks on average. This is explained by what is knownas efficiency salaries, by paying players more than their market value, the club not only buysexcellence, but also the players full loyalty and motivation. In contrast to the stable effect of salaries, the study shows that large investments in playerpurchases do not guarantee more points at all. Although newspaper headlines often focus onbillion-dollar signings, the correlation between transfer expenditures and points taken isuncertain. One explanation is that the expensive player often possesses great technical skillbut lacks the specific understanding of the new team's game system. Since there are a limitednumber of points to play for in the league, there is a diminishing margin return, as a club mayalready have a strong squad, each new star signing has less and less effect on the number ofpoints. When it comes to organizational changes, specifically coaching changes during the currentseason, our data shows that these rarely have the desired effect. Instead, coaching changestend to be associated with a decline in points. What can also be deciphered is that the clubsthat perform best have continuity and long-term thinking in their leadership.Overall, the study shows that success in the Premier League is not achieved through shortterm panic measures, but through strategic and long-term investments in player squad salariesand organizational stability. This will be a balance for clubs to relate to the regulations thatare to be followed.
