Sammanfattning

The aesthetic potential of concrete plays a vital role in creative Swedish architecture. Graphic concrete technology, which uses specialized membranes and chemical surface retarders, enables the integration of bespoke patterns and 3D effects onto precast elements. However, because industry expertise on this method remains fragmented, this study creates a clearer guide on manufacturing processes and past applications to establish a clearer framework for professionals. Ultimately, it aims to offer practical guidance that helps architects evaluate the feasibility of graphic concrete in future projects. The findings are based on literature reviews, expert interviews, and two trial casting sessions conducted with Heidelberg Materials Precast Abetong AB and Graphic Concrete, which involved analyzing six sample elements. The results highlight that retarder strength, pattern design, and production techniques are crucial factors in determining both the aesthetic and technical quality of the finished surface. The study concludes that trial casting is an essential phase to verify the synergy between the concrete mix and the chosen pattern before full-scale production begins. Furthermore, because outcomes are heavily influenced by local casting conditions, early collaboration between architects, suppliers, and manufacturers is vital to successfully navigating the specific possibilities and constraints of each project.
