Sammanfattning

Nyhamnen is an emerging area in Malmö located north of the central station and includes Inre hamnen (“Inner Harbor”) and Frihamnen (“Free harbor”). Traces of the port’s rich history are found in the architecture in the form of large reservoirs, silos, quays and other industrial buildings and objects. According to Malmö City’s master plan for Nyhamnen 2019, the area is intended to be transformed into an accessible, attractive, blue, bright, clean, contrastive, creative-inducing, defined, green, noise-free, sustainable, light, recreational, protected, secure, soothing, stripped, transparent, varied, versatile, vibrant, well-integrated and wind-optimized area. A mixed city is in demand. The redesign of Nyhamnen thus includes new residential buildings, bridges, kindergartens, parks, parking garages, schools, recycle stations, coastal protection and islands. What is missing is space for the unpredictable or unplanned. Instead of merging the new buildings with the old architecture, a clear distinction is made between new and old, which creates a division of two. While displaced and removed industrial architecture creates space for new parks, residential buildings, streets and squares, there is an opportunity to incorporate the industrial character of the area into the new – which is the focus of this master thesis. The ambition of the work is to intertwine Nyhamnens different parts and areas to create a unified whole. At the same time, I want to strengthen the identity and connect the mixed city better with the harbor and, more importantly, with the city. I, therefore, propose to use demolished industrial buildings, such as warehouses, to create and maintain certain axes that define the area today. The axes will thus go through residential buildings, streets, quays, parks and department stores and become an additional layer that connects the different parts of Nyhamnen and stretches to the city. With a uniformity in design language and materiality these axes contrast the mixed city’s pursuit of diversity, but at the same time become an essential part of Nyhamnen. Lastly, in my reflection I will use the concept of Lateness, as developed by Peter Eisenman and Elisa Iturbe. I will use Lateness because it is a general method of analysis which suits an area that contains many different kinds of architectural styles.
