Hegemonisk maskulinitet i reality-tv : En multimodal kritisk diskursanalys av hegemonisk maskulinitet i Bachelor Sverige 2025

Sammanfattning

The purpose of this study is to explore how masculinity is constructed in the Swedish season of Bachelor from 2025. An interesting aspect to this is the investigation of how power dynamics can affect gender hierarchies and relationships between the participants. This enabled the implementation of a multimodal critical discourse analysis. Through examination of several semiotic resources that could be identified in the 14 selected scenes, patterns regarding gender and the effect of dynamics concerning power and dominance in emotional environments were uncovered. This showed that masculinity norms and hegemonic masculinity have an inevitable representation through the reality show, and that this in turn confirms and establishes discourses regarding gender. The men exert practices to establish their place in the hierarchy, whilst women manifest these positions through encouragement for these practices. The results showed that behaviours and practices connected to hegemonic masculinity had an effect on different sorts of gender dynamics and relationships. This was depicted by several different semiotic elements which generated a nuanced analysis, that in turn revealed complexities and layers to hegemonic masculinity as a concept in reality television.
