This qualitative study examines how professional copywriters experience and adapt to artificial intelligence (AI) integration, exploring technological adoption and professional identity transformation. Through semi-structured interviews with ten professional copywriters across Europe and North America, combined with autoethnographic reflection, this research investigates human-AI collaboration dynamics in creative industries. The study reveals three distinct AI adoption strategies: complete integration, strategic compartmentalisation, and complete resistance. Strategic compartmentalisation emerges as the most sophisticated approach, allowing professionals to leverage AI efficiency for routine tasks whilst maintaining creative agency over strategic work. A central paradox emerges: AI tools that dramatically increase productivity simultaneously undermine the perceived value of copywriting skills. Participants report efficiency gains while experiencing compensation pressures, as employers use AI capabilities to justify reduced rates. The research documents fundamental workflow transformations, with copywriters shifting from content creators to "editorial directors" who refine AI-generated content. However, participants identify distinctly human domains: emotional intelligence, cultural nuance, and strategic decision-making. This research contributes to human-machine collaboration theory and professional identity literature while offering practical guidance for navigating AI integration in creative industries.
