Sammanfattning

This study examines how the surrealist concepts of chance, the unconscious, and co-creation can be applied to the understanding and interpretation of AI-generated art. The study departs from the premise that the questions raised by artificial intelligence in image-making – such as authorship, intention, and control – are not entirely new, but can be contextualized within the artistic strategies developed by Surrealism in the early twentieth century. Through an art historical and theoretical analysis, the study explores how surrealist practices such as automatic creation, collective authorship, and the use of chance can function as interpretative frameworks for contemporary AI-generated images. The study argues that AI-generated art can be understood as a form of distributed and co-creative image production, in which human intention interacts with algorithmic processes and a collective visual cultural archive. By applying Surrealism as an analytical perspective, the study contributes to a deeper understanding of AI-generated art as part of a longer art historical tradition rather than a radical rupture from earlier visual practices.
