I mitt / I hennes rum explores the concept of Bedroom Culture as a feminist and sociological phenomenon, focusing on the bedroom as a private and creative space for girls identity formation, socialization, and resistance. Drawing on an intersectional feminist framework, the project investigates how girls from different backgrounds experience the bedroom as a site of both empowerment and constraint. Through a combination of theoretical research and an informal, conversation-based method of gathering personal narratives, the work traces how the bedroom functions as a reflection of societal gender norms and as a platform for individual self-expression. The project combines empirical and artistic methods, including interviews and visual analysis to create a spatial installation. A real-size girl’s room has been created and constructed using collected second-hand objects and custom-designed elements. The room brings together the soft, curated aesthetics of girlhood - with its stuffed animals, pink tones, and decorative details - and the more self-authored, expressive signs of adolescence, such as cosmetics, clothing piles and posters of pop icons. These layered visual elements evoke the tension between imposed femininity and personal agency. A central part of the work is a sound piece composed of stories and memories related to girlhood and private spaces, combined with nostalgic pop music. The process emphasizes critical reflection on how design can be used as a tool to question norms and uplift hidden narratives.By revisiting the bedroom as both a physical and emotional space, I mitt / I hennes rum highlights the crucial role such spaces play in the development of identity, particularly for girls navigating the transition between childhood and adolescence. The project also considers the bedroom’s evolving role in a digital era, where social media platforms have become new arenas for identity performance. Ultimately, the work invites viewers to reconsider the significance of inti mate, often overlooked spaces in shaping girlhood and young female identity.
