Aim of thesisThe aim of the thesis is to understand how the issue of uranium mining is framed in ÖstersundsPosten, the biggest local newspaper in the county of Jämtland, where one of Sweden’s largesturanium deposits has been found. This is done by examining how uranium mining itself isframed, who gets to speak about it, and how the framing has changed over time.TheoryWe use framing to analyse how the placement of words, pictures and actors in specific parts ofthe texts can contribute to how uranium mining is presented in Östersunds-Posten.MethodQuantitative content analysis is used to examine a total of 193 articles from the years 2005,2010, 2018 and 2025. The content analysis is focused on the presence of evaluative words, arguments and actors in certain parts of the texts, most importantly the headlines, photographsand quotes.ResultsThe results show that uranium mining is framed by negativeness, especially surrounding thepossible effects on the water in Jämtland. The results also show that uranium mining is framedby politicians rather than geologists or representatives of the Swedish authorities.
