Sammanfattning

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview to the ways Jarlabanke, and his bridge have been portrayed in different media, textbooks, historical literature and newspapers, throughout different epochs. The place is absent from schoolbooks but depicted and translated in archaeological texts as early as the 17th century. In newspapers, the place is generally presented along concerns for its preservation. In early interpretations Jarlabanke was perceived as something unique. A good Christian who erected runestones and built monuments. Today we know that most runestones were created during the Christian era and there are more examples of people who erected runestones for themselves. Since the Jarlabanke stones were first discussed in the 17th century, theories about rune stones have changed. Translations of the inscriptions at Jarlabanke's bridge has not varied in meaning but in wording.
