The Sonnenallee is a nearly five kilometer long street in East Berlin that had a special status during the city's division from 1961 to 1989: The street was home to residents of the very long western section as well as for those who lived "The Short End of the Sonnenallee." With the publication of his novel of the same name in 1999, the author Thomas Brussig got out with a literary presentation of youth culture and coming of age at the border checkpoint from East to West Berlin. By emphasizing the critique of the GDR regime and the citizens' expressed desire for freedom, the novel complements the earlier published film "Sonnenallee” from Leander Haußmann, which focuses on the love story between young people living behind the Wall.Drawing on the aforementioned novel and film, this study—which takes a literature- and film-didactics-oriented approach—develops concrete recommendations for implementing the topic in classroom practice. The teaching concept, based on didactic and methodological considera-tions and grounded in current theories of foreign language didactics, is implemented within a sequence of lessons in a German as a foreign language course and subsequently evaluated. The findings resulting from the treatment of the topic at Swedish upper secondary schools are finally critically reflected upon and, with reference to their integration into action research, presented to fellow teachers for future use in the classroom.
