Sammanfattning

Media development and digitalization in recent decades have led to people having morecontent options than ever before. With the development of the digital media ecology, journalistic organizations are forced to compete with privately owned andadvertising-financed digital platforms. The purpose of this essay is to examine how journalists at different Swedish newsrooms workwith push notifications as a new element of digital journalism. The study intends to examinewhat controls which news become push notifications, partly from how newsrooms workpractically and partly how different circumstances and structures affect what ultimatelybecomes a push notification. The study was conducted through qualitative, semi-structured interviews with journalists invarious Swedish newsrooms. We asked questions that allowed the journalists to reason freelybased on their own experiences and then analyzed the respondents’ answers based on newsevaluation, digital media logic and the hierarchy of influences model. The analysis revealed that the main purposes of sending out push notifications were to informand attract readers. We were also able to conclude that news evaluation in connection to pushnotifications can be compared to how regular news is evaluated. It became clear that mostnewsrooms lack written rules when it comes to working with push notifications and that it ismostly a matter of work experience. These conclusions broaden the research and understanding of the push notificationphenomenon in journalism. Furthermore the research conducted in this study is important forincreasing knowledge about new features and working practices in an increasingly digitalizedmedia landscape.
